Students from the California School for the Blind recently developed a project as a way of helping unhoused neighbors in the community. The students packed over 400 hygiene kits to be distributed by organizations who provide services to the unhoused. Last week two students, along with their teachers, dropped of 100 of these hygiene kits for the Human Services Department to distribute.


We are grateful to the students for their hard work on this project.

Free Tax Services Available

Free tax preparation service is now available through VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program for those who made $75,000 or less last year or $90,000 or less for those aged 65 and over. 


Customers can choose to make an Appointment for an In-Person Meeting with a tax preparer or use our Virtual Service where you upload your tax documents for online tax preparation. Please see our tax flyer for details.


New This Year: Back Tax Service is now available year-round. Customers who need to file taxes for years 2020, 2021 and 2022 can call 510-574-2026 to request an appointment.

A Drive-Through Ballot Drop Stop (BDS) for voters who wish to drop off their Vote-By-Mail (VBM) Ballots will be available in the Fremont Family Resource Center parking lot on Monday, February 26 and Tuesday, February 27, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Enter at the FRC driveway on Liberty Street and follow directions in the parking lot to the Ballot Drop Stop. No need to exit your car. The Ballot Drop Stop is being staffed by the Registrar of Voters Staff, for the Presidential Primary Election, which is scheduled on March 5, 2024.

Join HICAP for a free presentation about Aging in Place: Hiring and Working with a Caregiver. The informative presentation will review definitions of skilled care and personal care and explain 

available payment sources. Receive tips for success and learn how to identify care needs to safely remain in the home. Attendees will also learn the differences between hiring through an agency or other methods and be provided with resources on how to hire and maintain employment of a caregiver.

Our Homeless Services team hosts drop-in hours as a South County Housing Resource Center in the Fremont Family Resource Center. This is an opportunity for people seeking housing problem-solving support, shelter assessments, referrals, or housing assessments. For more information, call the Fremont FRC at 510-574-2000.

California Dream for All Program: The California Housing Finance Agency (CalHFA) launched another round of funding for the California Dream For All Shared Appreciation Loan Program, a down payment assistance program for first-time homebuyers to be used in conjunction with the Dream For All Conventional first mortgage for down payment and/or closing costs. Learn more.

Salaam Food Pantry in South Fremont holds monthly food distributions on the 4th Saturday of the month from 10 - 11:30 a.m., with lunch provided from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. The Salaam Food Pantry is located at the Islamic Center of Fremont at 4039 Irvington Avenue. Affordable Housing in Fremont: In the next few years, more affordable housing is planned for Fremont. Nearly 800 new affordable rental units will become available for low-income households. To learn more, visit the City's Upcoming Units webpage.


Low-income Drivers can Save 50-75% on I-880 Express Lane Tolls: A new pilot program helps low-income travelers use the express lanes on I-880 between Milpitas and Oakland at a discounted rate. Bay Area residents can apply online or by using the paper application from the Fremont FRC. Income guidelines apply, and proof of income is required. Learn more.

Help for Energy Bills: Ava Community Energy (formerly East Bay Community Energy) has an Energy Bill Payment Assistance web page. It is designed to help you better understand what programs are available and the eligibility requirements for each. Alameda County Water District Customer Assistance Program:

Help on Tap customer assistance program provides qualifying single-family residential accounts a $61.30 credit on their bi-monthly water service charge. Credit will be applied upon approval of your application. Learn more..

Assistance for COVID-19 Related Funeral Expenses:

Under the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2021 and the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, FEMA provides financial assistance for COVID-19 related funeral expenses incurred after January 20, 2020. Visit FEMA COVID-19 Funeral Assistance for guidance and eligibility requirements and types of services funded.

Affordable Home Renovations: Renew Alameda County helps homeowners make renovations necessary to stay, grow, and thrive in their homes. Renew AC can make home improvement plans come to life - without breaking the bank. Renew AC provides 1% interest loans from $15,000 to $150,000 to qualified homeowners. Renew AC is for low-income homeowners who live in Alameda County. Learn more.
