PRESS RELEASE Date 10/25/10 New Haven Unified Dictionary Drive 2010 - Over 900 Dictionaries & Thesauruses Delivered A local real estate agent trying to drive up home values in Union City, donates over 900 Dictionaries & Thesauruses to every 3rd grader in New Haven Unified School District this year. This is the fifth year, Sunil Sethi, broker/owner of Sunil Sethi Real Estate has taken responsibility to donate dictionaries to all the 3rd graders in the school district covering all of Union City and part of South Hayward. Mr. Sethi, got involved with the program because he liked that it showed REALTORS are interested in improving the performance of local schools and when that happens home prices rise. When I first met with Rick LaPlante over at New Haven Unified 5 years ago, I was bit nervous taking on the responsibility to find sponsors to find dictionaries for all the kids. Each year it has become harder to find sponsors. This year, I had only 3 co-sponsors, the Fremont El...

Dictionary Project: Looking for Local Firms Interested in Participating

School will be starting, which means it's time for the DICTIONARY PROJECT. We are looking for 3-4 local firms interested in helping improve school performance by donating Dictionaries to every 3rd grader in New Haven Unified School District (Union City). This year we would also like to include thesauruses . This will be the 4th annual year Sunil Sethi and I have run the Dictionary Project with New Haven Unified. http://www.dictionaryproject.org/CMS/UI/usa.aspx?state=CA These dictionaries are for the students to keep and use throughout their education. We believe that if we help provide students with academic resources (that many do not have at home), they will benefit from using them by allowing them to do better academically, enjoy school more, and continue on to higher levels of formal education. Responses have been positive as we have heard from teachers, parents, and students regularly using their donated dictionaries, not only in 3rd, but throughout grade school. If you...

regarding class size reduction in New Haven

This was passed to neighbors of the Cambridge Way community. -sunil Dear Neighbors, The New Haven Unified School District is in the process of making some important decisions that stand to impact every student in our district. I encourage you to stay informed, either by attending school board meetings, reading the meeting minutes, talking to educators in our district and/or reading our local newspaper. This issues are complex and many, and have the potential to impact our kids for years to come. There is currently a petition being circulated for signatures in advance of this coming Tuesday night's school board meeting. At issue are the elimination of class size reduction and the reopening of Barnard White Middle School, which was closed for financial reasons several years ago. (The following link provides some background on the original decision: http://www.nhusd.k12.ca.us/system/files/faq.pdf ). The school is slated to be opened for 180 kids this fall. (For reference, the other...

Drastic Budget Cuts for New Haven Unified

below is the press release by NHUSD. -ss NEW HAVEN UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF EDUCATION BRIEFS Forced because of the ongoing state financial crisis to make another round of drastic budget cuts, the Board of Education on Tuesday night accepted a recommendation that will save – for only one year, unless a new revenue stream is identified – the co-curricular and extra-curricular activities that are so vital to the New Haven community. The Board approved staff recommendations totaling $3.6 million in new reductions for 2010-11, on top of $1.6 million in reductions previously approved for next year. As a result, class sizes will be larger in kindergarten through third grade in 2010-11, and the District no longer will offer transportation for elementary and middle school students. The Board also approved reductions that provide the state-mandated starting point for balancing the 2011-12 and 2012-13 budgets. Eliminating stipends and release periods for co-curricular and extra-curricular...

FW: New Haven Unified School District News Release: More Budget Cuts

I've noticed that the parents are taking greater interest in trying to help offset some of the budget cuts, schools will need to be more creative in asking for help from parents to help provide teachers the support they need to help teach their kids. Sunil Sethi www.sunilsethi.com -----Original Message----- MORE CUTS REQUIRED BECAUSE OF STATE BUDGET MESS UNION CITY (Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009) * The Board of Education of the New Haven Unified School District, forced to deal with the local impact of California*s financial crisis, will be asked Tuesday night to accept a recommendation for $5.9 million in reductions in the proposed budgets for 2009-10 and 2010-11 * on top of $4 million in cuts and internal borrowing for the current budget recommended earlier this month, and on top of $7 million in cuts made last year. *When you consider the compound effect that the reductions we*re recommending now will have in future years, the cumulative impact of these cuts will be $17.6 million,* Su...

Great Idea. I hope the Governor, follows your suggestion. Why should the legislature get paid for not doing it's job. Sunil Sethi Realtor, Fremont, Pleasanton, San Ramon, Union City real estate Specialist Show and Sell Realty http://www.sunilsethi.com/ -----Original Message----- Sent: Wednesday, January 21, 2009 10:13 AM Subject: New Haven News Release: Suspend State Legislature's Pay SCHOOL BOARD ASKS GOVERNOR TO REQUEST SUSPENSION OF PAY FOR LEGISLATORS UNION CITY (Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009) - With the state of California once again considering massive cuts to public education, the Board of Education on Tuesday night called on Governor Schwarzenegger to set in motion actions to keep legislators from getting paid when - as has become routine - they miss their annual deadline for passing the state budget. Dictionary Project

Steven Fong and I have been helping organize the distribution of dictionaries to all 3rd graders in the New Haven Unified School District since 2006 on behalf of the Bay East Association of Realtors. The dictionaries' are acquired through a national program called the Dictionary Project . For about $40 we can buy a box of 24 dictionaries to distribute to a 3rd grade classroom. I like this volunteer effort because as a Realtor I like doing activities which show the community that Realtors like to do activities that help communities increase their home values (I also organized the neighborhood watch and our annual National Night Out events). Also when we deliver the dictionaries to the kids in the classroom, they just warm up your heart from their appreciation. For the last two years, I've been asking Bayeast to let other businesses/individuals in the community participate with us because I believe the more groups of people we get involved with helping our schools, the better our...
