Fremont Climate Talks Week Recap

Our Climate Talks Week on February 1-5 was a great success! Over 150 people attended virtually over the five days and participated in a robust discussion on climate and sustainability issues. Thanks to everyone who participated! These dynamic conversations will help City staff develop a list of measures for Fremont's Climate Action Plan Update.

Common themes that emerged during the talks included:

  • support for Fremont's success reducing greenhouse gas emissions;
  • interest in how to upgrade home and business energy efficiency and appliances in an affordable way;
  • interest in mobility hubs, expanded bike and public transit infrastructure, and ways to shift away from cars;
  • reducing waste at home, disposing of special items, and turning food waste into compost;
  • support for Fremont's parks, green spaces, and a healthy urban tree canopy;
  • interest in water conservation;
  • ecological and technological approaches to emissions reductions and sequestration (drawdown);
  • support for green industry innovation and commercial fleet electrification technologies;
  • improving energy security and reliability; and
  • adopting solutions that better prepare us for the impacts of an already changing climate (adaptation and resiliency).

If you have follow up questions or comments, please email us. If you missed the event, you can view the video recordings and presentation slides by visiting our Climate Action Plan Update webpage.

We look forward to hosting an additional workshop on climate adaptation, resilience, and equity. More information will be available soon.

Online Community Forum Closing Soon
Have ideas after the Climate Talks last week that you still want to share? Since December, we have been gathering input and ideas on our Climate Action Plan Update on the Consider.it Online Community Forum. Be sure to make your voice heard before it closes!

The forum provides an opportunity for you to comment on suggested measures, propose new ideas, and respond to feedback received by other participants. Bring your big, bold, ambitious recommendations, show your support for others' comments, and offer advice on ways we might be able to improve our ideas.

Instructions on how to use the forum are included on the landing page. The forum will remain open until February 19, 2021, so sign up now at Fremont.gov/CAPConsiderIt and start engaging.

The Switch is On Campaign
Wouldn't it be cool if someone made a website with all the latest information about energy-efficient electric appliances and how to get local rebates for them? The Switch is On is that!

East Bay Community Energy (EBCE), Fremont's electricity provider, has partnered with the Building Decarbonization Coalition, PG&E, local energy providers, and local governments to create The Switch is On campaign. Appliances for heating/cooling, water heating, cooking, back-up power, and BBQing replace the natural gas combustion appliances in your home, improving your indoor air quality while maintaining comfort. They are efficient, modern, and, best of all, can be powered from the clean, renewable energy EBCE provides!

Shopping for a heat pump water heater? Homeowners may qualify for up to $2,000 in local incentives thanks to an EBCE/BayREN matching offer, as well as other state and federal rebates and credits. Bay Area Regional Energy Network (BayREN), a regional provider of energy efficiency solutions, is offering financial incentives if you switch your gas appliances to these high efficient electric alternatives.

Find out more about these clean power appliances, learn about financial incentives to reduce costs, and locate contractors to help you install them at The Switch is On website.
