Walnut Residences Still Needs More Work   To quote baseball legend Yogi Berra, "It ain't over till it's over"... and based on the latest meeting, it's not over for the proposed Walnut Residences project.   During the City Council Study Session on November 17, Carmel Partners presented yet another proposal for the Walnut Residences project at Walnut and Guardino. They decreased the number of units to 670 for a density of 53.1 dwelling units per acre, lowered the building heights to a mix of 3 and 4 stories, and increased the parking to a total of 1.7 spaces per unit for both residents and guests. Although the development team from Carmel Partners was pleased with their own efforts, others were not.   The most common comments from the audience were that the project needs even further reduction in the number of units, the building heights need to be no greater than 3 stories to fit with the surrounding neighborhood, and the number of parking spaces per unit needs t...

New Haven Unified Continues to Get Grants for It's Schools

  News From the New Haven Unified School District     New Haven Unified Awarded $1.3 Million Grant to Support Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math in Classrooms Last week, staff received news that New Haven Unified was awarded a California Math and Science Partnership (CaMSP) Grant for STEM education.  We are calling it the CREATES Grant.  The Collaborative Resources in Education to Advance Technology Engineering and Science (CREATES) Grant is a partnership led by New Haven Unified School District (NHUSD) with San Jose State University's College of Science and STEM Education Center and Our Lady of the Rosary School in Union City.  Forty-four third through eighth-grade teachers in all of our elementary and middle schools will participate in a summer "intensive" with follow up release days, for a total of 60 hours of professional development.  After each intensive, teachers will engage in follow-up hours including school si...
