The Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois was the country's "hottest" ZIP code last quarter, measured by how far above the average list price homes are going for. California claimed five of the nation's hottest ZIPs in the study. Long-Term Mortgage Interest Rates Edge Higher

They've been fluctuating around record lows not seen in more than a half-century for a good many months now. This week was one where that movement was upward, according to industry data released Thursday. A nationwide survey conducted by Freddie Mac found that 30-year fixed-rate mortgages rose to 4.23 percent, while 15-year rates edged up to 3.66 percent. Bankrate reports that the larger jumbo 30-year fixed rate reversed last week's decline, returning to 5.10 percent. And this year, recalling his own school experience, Sunil Sethi is supplying the students with thesauruses, too. With help from a handful of partners, Mr. Sethi purchased more than 900 dictionaries and thesauruses that he will deliver Friday to students at each of New Haven Unified's seven elementary schools. "We've upgraded the dictionaries this year," Mr. Sethi said, "and I decided to buy thesauruses, too, because I remembered how helpful they were when I was in school and just starting to write essays." RE/MAX Predicts Increased Home Sales in Coming Months According to RE/MAX's monthly report, the housing market is attempting to return to traditional seasonal trends after a slow summer following the spring rush to qualify for the government's homebuyer tax credit. BofA - Blames loss on their inability to use monopoly pricing power on debt card transactions

Bank of America Loses $7.3 Billion in Third Quarter Bank of America said Tuesday that it lost $7.3 billion during the three-month period ending in September. The company attributed the deficit to new financial reform regulations related to credit and debit card payments. On the mortgage side of its business, though, the company is seeing improvements. Countrywide's Former Chief Mozilo Settles SEC Charges for $67.5M The co-founder of what was once the largest, most lucrative subprime lender in the country has agreed to pay a total of $67.5 million to settle allegations of fraud. Former Countrywide chief Angelo Mozilo will pay the SEC a $22.5 million penalty to settle charges that he misled investors about the risk associated with Countrywide's business. Mozilo will also pay $45 million to settle insider trading charges. B of A Indemnifies Title Insurer

This was announced last week: B of A Indemnifies Title Insurer   More from the B of A foreclosure debacle : Fidelity National Financial has agreed to issue title insurance policies on the bank’s REOs in exchange for B of A’s agreement to indemnify the insurer should the title in question be challenged due to any deficiencies in foreclosure processing practices. Another new low for interest rates

Mortgage Rates Drop Yet Again to New Lows The last time rates for 30-year mortgages were as low as they are now was in April 1951. Thirty-year fixed-rate mortgages have been under 5 percent for 23 weeks in a row, according to data gathered by Freddie Mac. This week, the GSE reports that the average 30-year rate fell again to break the survey's all-time low, hitting 4.19 percent.
