UC Police Stimulus Grant Request

Last night there was a special UC City Council meeting to consider the submission of a grant for federal money that can be used to pay for police. Without this money, there may be a shortfall $2 million (read $2M cuts) in the UC city budget, which will affect the UC Police budget. This could affect officer headcount, including the COPPS staff (they run Neighborhood Watch). A good number of concerned citizens showed up to voice their support for the police and to ask the city council to apply for grant money from President Obama’s Stimulus Act.

The City Council voted unanimously to approve writing the grant application and submitting it. Grant app is due 4/15, and if granted, money will start distribution within 30 to 90 days.
