Welcome to the Start of American Education Week
November 13 to 19
Today is the first day of American Education Week, which was originally
established "for the purpose of informing the public of the accomplishments
and needs of the public schools and to secure the cooperation and support of
the public in meeting those needs." This year is the 90th anniversary of
AEW, and the NEA has several suggestions for how to get involved. First of
all, they have designated special days during the week to recognize
teachers, support professionals, and substitute teachers. If you know anyone
in these important roles, take time to thank them. Second, they have
suggested actions you can take to support public schools. One of these is to
help fund classroom projects. Dictionary Project sponsors are doing this in
a big way each year, providing entire classes of children with dictionaries
to help them with their schoolwork. Without you, many teachers would have to
do without these important references in their classrooms. To read about
their other specific suggestions, visit the NEA website, www.nea.org/aew
