NEWS FROM EAST BAY REGIONAL PARKS

Heading into Fall in the Park District

A MESSAGE FROM GENERAL MANAGER SABRINA LANDRETH

September ushers in the start of fall in the East Bay, and our Regional Parks are ready to welcome you with a full slate of events and community celebrations.

In this issue, find links to some of our most anticipated events, including:

· Garin Apple Festival

· Ardenwood All Abilities Day

· California Coastal Cleanup Day

· UN International Day of Peace

· And programs honoring Hispanic Heritage Month, California Biodiversity Day, and Latino Conservation Week

Autumn is a wonderful time to get outside and enjoy the crisp mornings and great hiking conditions our parks have to offer. However, this time of year is also prime for wildfires, due to dried out vegetation from summer heat and the offshore winds that historically occur in September and October. Please stay alert to fire warnings and follow all park visitor guidelines. Your safety remains our highest priority.

We look forward to welcoming you into the parks this fall—come celebrate the season with us!

Park District Acquires Point Molate Property for Future Regional Park

On Aug. 26, the Park District acquired 82 acres at Point Molate for a future Regional Park. This acquisition ensures the shoreline is protected forever as public parkland and open space—a remarkable achievement for the entire Bay Area.

Special thanks to the City of Richmond, Guidiville Rancheria of California, California State Coastal Conservancy, and California Energy Commission Commissioner Nancy Skinner for their support in making this vision a reality. More info.

Park District Police Department Achieves Full Staffing

The Park District has reached 100% staffing at the sworn police officer rank—a significant achievement. With all 76 sworn officer positions filled, the department is positioned better than ever to deliver on its high standards for service, safety, and community trust. This milestone underscores the Park District's commitment to recruitment and retention and reflects the department's reputation as a rewarding and respected place to build a career in public safety. Land Added to Future Deer Valley Regional Park

On Aug. 8, the East Bay Regional Park District announced the acquisition of a 140-acre property from the John R. Freschi, Jr., living trust in partnership with the East Contra Costa County Habitat Conservancy. The property is located in eastern Contra Costa County, south of Antioch and southwest of Brentwood, within the East Contra Costa County Habitat Conservation Plan/Natural Community Conservation Plan area.

The property features beautiful oak woodlands, sprawling grasslands, Marsh Creek, and a seasonal pond. Wildlife studies have not yet been conducted, but the habitat found on the property is known to support the California red-legged frog, the California tiger salamander, and a variety of raptors. New Technology to Fight Wildfires

On Aug. 19, the East Bay Regional Park District Board of Directors voted to join the statewide ALERTCalifornia wildfire camera network to help monitor wildfires. The agreement allows the Park District to control existing cameras covering Regional Parks, providing fire personnel with enhanced tools to detect and respond quickly to fire outbreaks. The Park District will also explore potential new locations for cameras.

The ALERTCalifornia network uses cutting-edge technology to identify wildfires, provide early confirmation, and enhance situational awareness. The cameras can spin 360 degrees and use AI to detect smoke, with alerts sent to emergency command centers and firefighters. The system also helps monitor and assess the impacts of other natural disasters, such as extreme weather, landslides, and earthquakes. The public can view the ALERTCalifornia camera network at alertcalifornia.org.
