Local real estate agents Sunil Sethi and Steven Fong from Sunil Sethi Real Estate have been heading the Dictionary and Thesaurus giveaway to all 3rd Graders in New Haven Unified for the past 7 years. That equates to a total of over 10,000 reference books donated or over $20,000 spent. They continue to donate each year because they want our students to succeed in school and ultimately lead successful and productive lives. As local REALTORS they understand the direct correlation between helping kids do better in school and increasing home values.
They believe that increasing home values are a function of improving school performance, improving neighborhoods, such as reducing crime, and improving the home’s condition. The first two factors of which are directly influenced when students do better in school.
This year they sponsored their 2nd annual literacy essay challenge titled “I Know How to Eat Healthy”, which proceeded last year’s challenge titled “I Know What I Want to do When I Graduate From High School. They wanted to raise awareness and spark discussion among the students about setting up a plan for their future and what it takes for them to succeed. All the students who submitted an essay received a recognition award and their essays were published in an online compilation made available for all the students to read.
Each year because of the economy, they’ve seen co-sponsors come and go. This year they have 1 new-sponsor, The Office of County Supervisor, Richard Valle, who represents the 2nd district. Continuing their support are Kristie Turner of Kristie Turner Insurance Agency and Risha Kilaru of Prospect Mortgage.
