James Logan High School Hosts MLK Tourney This Weekend
Hundreds of speech and debate students from schools across the country will gather at James Logan High School this weekend (Jan. 18-20) for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Forensics Tournament.

Competition begins at 4 p.m. Friday and resumes at 8 a.m. Saturday. The final rounds Sunday start at 8 a.m., and an awards ceremony will be in the Performing Arts Center at 7:15 p.m.



More Prizes Announced for Foundation Gala
A one-night stay at the Sheraton Sonoma County, a Kindle fire, and lunch with the Alameda County Fire Department have been added to the list of prizes and auction items for the New Haven Schools Foundation’s second annual “Casino Night” gala on Saturday, Feb. 2.

“On a Mississippi Riverboat” is the title of the event, which will include a gourmet southern buffet dinner and an evening of casino games. The fun starts at 5:30 p.m. and continues until midnight at the Southern Alameda County Buddhist Church, 32975 Alvarado-Niles Rd., Union City.

Guests will receive $1,000 each in casino chips to play poker, black jack, craps and roulette, and compete for raffle prizes. The event also will feature a live and silent auction. Prizes and auction items also include:

  • Two round-trip tickets to Hawaii
  • A three-day, two-night stay for six at a Truckee-Tahoe cabin
  • A flat-screen television
  • A one-night stay at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco
  • A VIP suite for an Oakland A’s game
  • Field-level tickers for a San Francisco Giants game
  • A lunch cruise on the San Francisco Bay
  • A “don’t Cook for a Week” package from local eateries
  • Wines from Eric Ross and Duckhorn wineries
  • Various gift baskets

The dinner menu features a variety of appetizers; entrée dishes with tri-tip, salmon or vegetarian options; a choice of side dishes and a dessert cart, all with a Southern twist. Guests also will receive a specialty cocktail or one glass of wine or a Gordon Biersch beer, or two non-alcoholic beverages. There also will be an espresso cart, hosted by Paddy’s Coffee.

Individual entry is $100, half of which is tax-deductible. VIP packages and sponsorship opportunities also are available. Attire will be semi-formal and guests must be 21 or older to attend. Tickets can be purchased online (www.nhsfgala.evite.com)
