Kitayama Elementary Teacher Wins CTA's 2014 GLBT "Guy DeRosa" Safety in Schools Grant & Scholarship

Kitayama Elemntary School's third-grade teacher Kimberly DeBono won the 2014 GLBT "Guy DeRosa" Safety in Schools Grant & Scholarship Program.  This program provides grants to support projects and presentations that promote understanding and respect for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender persons, in addition to scholarships for members enrolled in a teacher/counseling credential or graduate program who understand the importance of GLBT educators as role models.

From Ms. Debono: This project specifically targets getting books into classrooms that demonstrate there are all kinds of families.  I was inspired to do this from one of my past students who didn't feel that her family of two moms had to be kept a secret!  We need to move forward and honor ALL family make ups that are in our classrooms, and this is just one little step in that direction.  Keeping all kids safe and letting them know that their family and their choices have value in our society. These books will be available for other sites to borrow as well.
