District Offices and All Schools Closed Monday, February 18th For Presidents' Day
All schools and the district office will be closed this Monday, February 18, in honor of Presidents' Day.
The New Haven Unified School District is Seeking the Community's Input in its Search for a Superintendent.
In January, New Haven Unified Superintendent Dr. Arlando Smith announced his intent to retire at the end of this 2018-19 school year. The Board has begun its search for a new, highly qualified Superintendent of Schools. In order to facilitate that search, the District has secured the services of McPherson & Jacobson, L.L.C., an executive search firm, the same firm which was used in the District's last, successful search for a superintendent.
The search firm will be meeting with various stakeholders throughout the community to gain their input in regards to what qualities and characteristics they are looking for in a Superintendent. The firm will host community forums in order to solicit community input. The date(s) of these community forums will be determined in the near future.

Celebration of Life for Joann Kersten
Retired New Haven teacher leader, Joann Kersten, passed away in January of this year. Joann began her career in New Haven in 1976 as a Reading Teacher at Alvarado Middle School. When she retired in 2002, she was Program Specialist in English Language Development at the District Office. A Celebration of Joann's life will be held on Saturday, March 30, at the Kenneth C. Aitken Senior Center located at 17800 Redwood Road in Castro Valley from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.

Minutes from the District's Guiding Coalition / LCAP Meeting
The Guiding Coalition met on February 5, 2019. The group received a budget update, based on the Governor's Budget which was released in January.
California Dashboard data was shared, and groups analyzed the data and provided ideas for next steps in the LCAP.

Alameda County Fathers Corps to Host Fatherhood Summit 2019
Please join us for Alameda County's inaugural Fatherhood Summit, hosted by the Alameda County Fathers Corps (ACFC), to celebrate, honor, and acknowledge the critical role fathers and father figures play in their families and communities. Nominate Your Favorite Math or Science Teacher for Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching
The New Haven community is invited to nominate exceptional science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science teachers from our schools for for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). The PAEMST program recognizes the importance of honoring excellent teaching and promoting STEM education. Nominations can be submitted at www.paemst.org. The nomination deadline is March 1, 2019 and the application deadline is May 1, 2019.
Update from Our Colleague Renee Henderson, Principal of School Lost in NorCal Fire
In November of this year, we shared information regarding former New Haven teacher, Renee Henderson, who is the principal of Cedar Elementary School in Magalia. Her school and much of the surrounding area was destroyed in this fall's Camp Fire. That story included a GoFundMe link which allowed our community to donate towards restoring what was lost by the staff at Cedar Elementary. Below is an update from Ms. Henderson:
"Hello My NHUSD family,
I am now the principal of Paradise Elementary school in Oroville. Most of the teachers not only lost their home, but they lost their classrooms, too. I wanted you to know that they send you a huge thank you and a hug because I have been getting them personal items they lost in the fire from the Go Fund Me account that the district does not provide. We had a staff meeting today, and I told them that my wonderful friend Teri Gruenwald of CCMS started a Go Fund Me for our staff and students. The "presents" are from the donors. They were grateful beyond words! So thank you for keeping us in your hearts. We are doing well and moving forward!"
Applications for Zone After School Program is Now Open
The ZONE After School Program is currently accepting student applications for the 21st Century Community Learning Center grant funded site, Searles Elementary School (this applies to students currently attending school at Searles Elementary Elementary) - limited space is available in grades: K/1, 2, 4, and 5.

NHSF Scholarship Applications Now Open
Graduating seniors from all NHUSD high school programs are eligible to apply for college scholarships through New Haven Schools Foundation from now through March 3. Detailed information has been emailed to the students. Over $140,000 in scholarships were awarded to the class of 2018, and this year's offerings are expected to surpass that amount. Alameda County Transition Faire
We are pleased to announce that the 2019 Alameda County Transition Faire will be held on Saturday, March 23rd from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm at the College of Alameda. The Transition Faire is an opportunity for students and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families, service providers and school district staff to learn about life after high school. IVCMS College and Career Fair
Itliong-Vera Cruz Middle School's College and Career day is just around the corner on March 1st from 10:30 am to 1:30pm. We are excited to be able to offer students the opportunity to have exposure to a large range of colleges and careers. In order to accomplish this, we need your help! Get Healthy, Have Fun, and Support the Searles Parent-Teacher Club
Families are welcome to come by Searles Elementary on Monday and Thursday evenings from 6:30-7:30 p.m. to participate in Zumba!, an exercise fitness program that involves dance and aerobic movements performed to energetic music. Adult Zumba! Days are Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8:15-9:15 a.m. Participants are encouraged to bring a water bottle and wear comfortable clothing. Union City Family Center (formerly Kids' Zone)
The Union City Family Center (UCFC) operates a dynamic Family Center, located on the campus of the Barnard-White Middle School. UCFC Family Liaisons, assigned to specific school sites, expand access to UCFC and partner resources for the community. Liaisons provide case management and resource linkages for displaced/low wage families/youth who receive needed support with shelter, transportation, emergency food, clothing, job training/job search (Highway to Work & Cypress Mandela), financial coaching/taxes (SparkPoint), affordable childcare (Kidango) applying for benefits, and our safe parking lots program for displaced families ~ all co-located at the Union City Family Center. UCFC partners with community volunteers and over 35 community agencies!
The Union City Family Center is now an Alameda County Food distribution site! Food will be distributed every Tuesday that school is in session from 3:00 pm - 5:00 p.m. UCFC is located at 725 Whipple Road, Union City, CA (on the Barnard-White Middle School campus). Volunteers are welcome!

The Searles Community Cafe is a Parent / Community space to gather information from our school site and / or community organizations. This month we have Alameda County First Five, EAOP Presentation on college readiness and our monthly coffee with the principals. Open to all our district families. NHSF Grant Application Period Now Open
Every year, the New Haven Schools Foundation awards grants to teachers, advisors, program managers, and coaches. Grant applications may be submitted from now through March 3, 2019. There are four grant programs: a) Innovations in Education – Classroom grants for teachers. B) Project: Enrichment – Funding for co-curricular or extra-curricular programs. C) STEM – Funding for innovative projects in science, technology, engineering, and math. D) Brian Kelly Tutoring Fund – Support for tutoring programs in the New Haven Unified School District. Grants are submit to budget limitations, and may be used for supplies, equipment, books, software, fees and other similar items. Start thinking about it now, and watch for more information as the date approaches.

The American Association of University Women to Host Annual Mother/Daughter Math & Science Discovery Day
On Saturday, February 23, 2019, the The American Association of University Women, Fremont Branch will host their annual Mother/Daughter STEM Discovery Day, a morning of fun and learning for 3rd/4th Grade girls and their mothers. San Francisco "Give Kids a Smile" Children's Dental Health Fair ~Saturday, Mar. 2, 2019, 9:00 am - 1:30 pm
A free "Give Kids a Smile" dental health fair will be held on Saturday, Mar. 2 between 9:00 am and 1:30 pm at the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry's Hutto Patterson Pediatric Dentistry Clinic in downtown San Francisco. Kids are invited for free dental check-ups, cleanings, fluoride treatment, sealants, orthodontic evaluations, games, entertainment, Little Explorers' Petting Zoo and more. More than $150 in free dental services will be provided to each child! The event is open to children up to age 17 (accompanied by an adult). No appointments are required.

Mission Valley ROP Open House, Thursday, February 28
Mission Valley ROP will be hosting a Program Showcase (Open House) for interested students/parents to learn more about the classes offered at the Mission Valley ROP Career Technical Training Center at 5019 Stevenson Blvd., Fremont, 94538 on Thursday, February 28th from 6:30 - 8:00 pm. Current 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students that want to learn more about the classes offered can visit in that time frame to see the building, meet the instructors, and to learn more about the programs.

Two Way Dual Immersion Parent Information Meeting
At Searles Elementary, we have experienced tremendous success during our first year of implementation of the Spanish Two-Way Dual Immersion Language Program. We have been impressed with our students' growth in their bilingual and biliterate skills, academic achievement, as well as cross cultural competency. This program is a wonderful way for Native Spanish speakers and Native English speakers to become proficient in both languages.
We are excited to continue to build on the success of our Two-Way Dual Language Immersion program. If you are a parent of an incoming kindergarten student or a student who will be a 1st grader for the 2019-2020 school year and are interested in the program, please attend our mandatory Parent Information Meeting.
