It is both a celebration of the natural environment we enjoy in the Regional Parks and a reminder of our responsibility to take care of it. Every day is Earth Day in the Park District, and there are all kinds of ways to celebrate and honor the Earth. Volunteer at an Earth Day clean-up event in a Regional Park or Shoreline, join us for an Earth Day themed activity, or take a hike or ride in nature. More info. | Save the Date: ParkFest Saturday, May 11 at Lake Chabot | Save the Date for "ParkFest: Celebrate 90 Years of Your East Bay Regional Parks" on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at Lake Chabot Regional Park. This community birthday festival will have music, performances, a kids' zone, hands-on fun, nature exhibits and displays, food trucks, eco-friendly activities, and more. Free parking and admission. Bring your family and friends! More info. | 90th Anniversary "Explore Your Parks" Adventure Program at Ardenwood's Sheep Shearing Day - April 13 | Join us for Sheep Shearing Day on Saturday, April 13, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Ardenwood Historic Farm in Fremont. The event will include a special 90th Anniversary presentation at 11:15 a.m. See the farm's sheep get their annual "haircut", try your hand at wool carding, and make your own wooly lamb to take home. Park admission fees apply. Parking is free. More info. | Celebrating Our 90th Anniversary at Big Break's All Abilities Day | More than 400 community members enjoyed Big Break's All Abilities Day in March, which featured a 90th Anniversary presentation with Park District General Manager Sabrina Landreth and Board Director Colin Coffey. The District strives to lessen barriers to parks and increase access for all, investing in programs and events that expand park access and help ensure all visitors have a sense of welcome, safety, and belonging in parks. This will be the third informational meeting where project architects, planners, and program managers will discuss and provide an overview of the Tilden EEC replacement project. Meeting topics will include: • Summary of the project process to date • Presentation of the preferred design option for the new facility • Project timeline and additional opportunities to be involved Zoom Registration | Project Webpage | Meeting Flyer | Crown Beach Western Snowy Plover Protection Zone Update | Good news for a threatened and endangered shorebird! Providing a protected area at Crown Beach for the western snowy plover is showing favorable results for plover populations. More info. | | Iris Garden at Dry Creek Pioneer Opening April 25 | Enjoy the splendor of the Iris Garden in bloom at Dry Creek Garden. Visitors are welcome in the Iris Garden from April 25 through mid-May, Thursday-Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The garden boasts close to 2,000 varieties of irises. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the day with the flowers, the birds, and the bees! Entry is free. Please follow directional signage from Dry Creek staging area to the Iris Garden entrance. Dogs are not allowed in the garden. The main part of Dry Creek Garden will remain closed for 2024 due to ongoing storm damage repairs. Map to Dry Creek Pioneer Regional Park | "Explore Your Parks" Adventure Series: Trail Day Hike at Big Break Regional Park - April 27 | Head to Big Break on Saturday, April 27 from 2-3 p.m. for Celebrate Trails Day, an annual celebration of America's trails that encourages people to get outside and enjoy the nation's exceptional trails and trail systems. More info. | | "Explore Your Parks" Adventure Series: Bioblitz at Coyote Hills Regional Park - April 28 | Join us Sunday, April 28 from 9:30- 11:30 a.m. for a City Nature Challenge Bioblitz, a friendly competition among cities to make the most observations, find the most species, and engage the most people in the world of nature. While on a short hike, help find, photograph, and identify plants and animals using the iNaturalist app on smartphones or mobile devices, or bring a digital camera. More info. | | Carbonator Site Visit with CA Natural Resources Agency Deputy Secretary | At the end of March, the Park District's fire department and government affairs team hosted a tour of the carbonator project site in Anthony Chabot Regional Park for California Natural Resources Agency Deputy Secretary for Forest and Wildfire Resilience Lisa Lien-Mager. The carbonator is an innovative fuels reduction tool that the Park District is using to manage the many acres of dead and dying trees within its parks. As an outcome of the site visit, the Deputy Secretary left with a stronger understanding of the Park District's wildfire mitigation work, as well as the necessary state resources to support continued efforts. Regularly scheduled plant sales are cancelled on Wednesday, April 10 and 17, and Saturday, April 6. Check the Regional Parks Botanic Garden website for sale hours and a full listing of plants, pot sizes, and prices. | | Sunday Music at the Garin Barn, Hayward - April 28 | Join us on Sunday, April 28 from 2-3 p.m. at the Garin Barn Visitor Center for a musical interlude! After a long week working on the farm, it is essential to take some time to relax. Bring your musical instruments to the Red Barn at Garin Regional Park for a whimsical old-time feel and pleasant tunes and learn to play along.
